August 30, 1757

This is our first 18th century Principles of War Scenario for the
battle of Gross Jaegersdorf in 1757 between Von Lehwalt’s Prussian army and the
Russians under Apraksin. The Prussians, although outnumbered in infantry and
artillery pursued the Russians across the Pregel when they retired over it. The
Russians expected the Prussians to remain over the river and encamped on the
other side Norkitten wood. The Prussians decided to follow them and at 1:30 in
the morning pushed through the woods in an attempt to catch the Russians by
surprise. The Russians did not sound the alert until 4:30 A.M. After a desperate
fight the Russians defeated the Prussians by weight of numbers and artillery.
However the strategic victory was won and the Russians called of the campaign in
East Prussia shortly thereafter. This resulted in the court marshal of Apraxin
and more breathing time for Frederick.
Setup
Prussians begin between the Norkitten wood and the river Pregel
Russians set up in front of Gross Jaegersdorf up to 2" away from the
wood.
Special rules for this scenario
The Prussians begin with one movement base per command. The Russians cannot
use movement bases.
The Pregel and Auxinne rivers are impassible
Russians may not move until the first Prussian movement base has been
spotted or until turn 6 whichever comes first.
Scenario is 18 turns long due to the early start of the battle.
All spotting is at high terrain for turns 1 and 2, 2 worse (i.e. linear
becomes high) for turns 3 and 4 and one worse for turns 5 and 6.
Prussians attack first
Prussians win if they inflict more casualties than they take and remain on
the field.
Prussian
All Prussian Infantry have battalion guns.
