Renaissance 1494 to 1660
The Pike dominates the early years. Mercenary armies are hired to swell armies. Conflicts include the Thirty Years war, The English Civil War, The Huguenot wars and various wars in Central and Eastern Europe.

The Napoleonic Wars 1792-1815
The French Revolution starts the next evolution in warfare. The age of the professional army is dead, the musket and the mob now dominate. Large armies are created by the introduction of conscription.

19th Century 1820-1900
Muzzle loading weapons are slowly replaced by breach loaders, and artillery continues to develop. Conflicts include many European conflicts as Nation States are created, and the various wars in North America as the US establishes it's identity.

The Euopean Powers need raw resources to feed their factories. Africa and Asia are colonised by the Imperial powers. This period is dominated by professional armies fighting Irregulars.

This period sees the introduction of the maxim machine gun and quick fire artillery. Conflicts include Russo-Japanese War, The Balkan Wars, World War I, The Russian Civil War and The Chinese Civil War.

The beauty of The Principles of War series of rules is that the same mechanism is used for all sets. These means that the wargamer can focus on those aspects of the period that model the practices of warfare and not have to learn a whole new mechanism. Small subtle changes in melee, morale and firing factors have great influence but command and control, firing, morale, melee and
movement follow the same format. So why not try a new period ?
Il bello delle regole The Principles of War è che lo stesso meccanismo è usato per ogni periodo. Questo vuol dire che il giocatore può concentrarsi sugli aspetti del periodo che simulono le particolarità del periodo senza dovere imparare tutte le regole di nuovo. Ci sono cambiamenti piccoli nel combattimento corpo a corpo, morale e tiro che hanno una grande importanza ma le regole sul commando, tiro, corpo a corpo e movimento seguono sempre le stesse linee. Allora perche non provare un periodo nuovo?
The Napoleonic period rules are designed to cover warfare from the beginning of the French Revolution to the fall of Napoleon in 1815.
Le regole Napoleoniche coprono le guerre dall’inizio della Rivoluzione Francese alla caduta di Napoleone nel 1815.
The period started with warfare being the sport of kings with small professional armies using the linear tactics epitomized in the wars of Frederick the Great of Prussia. With the French Revolution this changed to war of conscript armies involving the whole population. These large armies required new methods of manoeuvre and deployment which were found in the writings of French 18th Century military writers. This new system used columns to manoeuvre and allowed armies to deploy much later than previously, thereby giving them more flexibility.
Il periodo comincia con la Guerra come sport per i Re, con eserciti piccoli e professionali che usano le tattiche lineari usate durante le Guerre di Federico il Grande di Prussia. Con la Rivoluzione Francese questo diventa una guerra di eserciti di arruolati, impegnando l’intera popolazione. Questi eserciti grossi avevano bisogno di nuovi metodi per la manovra e lo scheiramento che si sono trovati nelle scritte dei scrittori militari francesi del 18° secolo. Questo sistema nuovo usava colonne per manovrare e permetteva agli eserciti di schierarsi molto piu tardi di prima, dandoli piu flessibilità.
