Admiral Seymour's Relief
Attempt
 |
In 1899 a band of quasi-religious unemployed farmers rose up in
the provinces around Peking. They were protesting the influence of the
great Western Powers in China. At first the Chinese government sought to
supress them but they continued to thrive and eventually threatened the
foreign legations in Peking. Vice Admiral Sir Edward Seymour led a
group of sailors and marines from the coast on an attempt to relieve the
beleaguered legations. This book covers all of the major and several
smaller actions of this campaign beginning with the Chinese Imperial
Army's clashes with the Boxers and ending with Seymour's bedraggled force
limping home. Follow the European force as it first tries to break through
to Peking and then is forced to fight its way back to
safety.
