This Battle was the major action fought during General Wellesley's Tactical withdrawal though Portugal during the summer of 1810. Having conducted his planned retreat west along the Coa and Mondego rivers Wellesley turned to face Massena's invading French army on ground of his own choosing at Busaco, north east of Lisbon. 27th September 1810 |
